The gorgeous trail along Shunga Creek is the one just north of highway 470 bypass on the map above. It is approximately a 4-mile hike from Fairlawn to the Capital Building. It includes beautiful trees, running water and small wildlife with numerous types of colorful singing birds. The trail enjoys walkways under major streets including Fairlawn, Gage, Washburn and Topeka Blvd so there is little interaction with street traffic. Youngsters under 12 years of age must be accompanied by one or more registered adult. Don't get lost at 21st and Fillmore. Go off the trail to the sidewalk and cross the street. Take the sidwalk as it curves south from 21st Street and goes under Topeka Boulevard. Run/walk/dance/bicycle until you come to a large round about. If you look right there is a bridge over a creek. Turn left at the round about shown on the map as a short trail just east of Kansas Avenue. That brings you to Monroe and 17th. You will pass in front of the federal historic site of Brown versus Board of Education. Follow Monroe north toward the Kansas State Capitol to 10th Street. The map herein is from the Kansas Bike Trail Map.
